Denture Relining
Dentures sit on top of the gum. But the gum changes shape due to bone loss over time, particularly in the period following an extraction. This may cause dentures to become mobile. The denture can be relined to improve the fit, but this may make the denture heavier.
Tray Whitening
One of the methods for whitening teeth uses a ‘tray’ method. First, impressions are taken from which a study model is made. This is painted with a special material which increases the thickness of the tooth area. When the tray is prepared, a small pocket is produced. The whitening solution occupies this pocket ensuring that […]
Interdental Brushing
The TePe interdental brush is used to clean in between teeth. Turning the brush on insertion will help access. Used daily, it removes plaque and food debris where your usual brush cannot reach. For spaces at the back of the mouth, bend the brush in a slight curve but never at right angles, this will […]
Bruxism
Grinding the teeth can cause wear. The canines and the front incisors wear first. The enamel can be lost exposing the soft dentine underneath.
Dry Mouth
Saliva is produced by the salivary glands in the mouth. It naturally protects the teeth, washing away plaque, debris and neutralising acid. A reduction or absence of saliva can be caused by a number of factors. Reduced saliva flow can lead to more plaque and debris build up which can increase the likelihood of a […]
Brushing
To brush your teeth efficiently you should use small circular movements with the brush held at 45 degrees to the tooth. Move systematically around the mouth, spending 30 seconds at each quadrant; upper right, upper left, lower right, lower left and covering all surfaces; front biting surface and back. A good technique should take 2 […]
Smoking
Smoking has many effects on oral health. Increased plaque, tartar and staining can occur, as well as furring of the tongue (increasing bad breath), reduced blood flow to the gums which can have the same effect on the heart tissue. Smoking may cause gums to recede, tooth movement, tooth loss and ‘white spots’.
Veneers
Discoloured, chipped or cracked teeth can benefit from a veneer. A thin layer of the tooth surface is shaved off. A veneer is made to fit perfectly, protecting the tooth underneath.
Diastemas
A gap in the front teeth (Diastema) can appear unsightly. A quick alternative for treatment is to have the teeth built with composite. Tubes are placed over the two teeth and filled with Composite material. This builds up the teeth, closing the gap. The material is hardened with a bright light.
Implant
An implant can replace a missing tooth. A hole is prepared in the jawbone in stages. An Implant is fitted in the mouth and a healing cap is inserted. When the Implant has healed, the healing cap is exposed, and an implant abutment inserted. A crown tooth is then fitted to the abutment.
